Eric William Ravilious was a Briti…sh painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver. He grew up in Sussex, and is particularly known for his watercolours of the South Downs, Castle Hedingham and other English landscapes, which examine English landscape and vernacular art with an off-kilter, modernist sensibility and clarity. He served as a war artist, and was the first British war artist to die on active service in World War II when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland.

With over 200 illustrations, mostly in colour, including reproductions of all 110 of Ravilious' wartime watercolours, made whilst an Of…ficial War Artist, in addition to just about every other painting, engraving, cotton, and ceramic design he made during this time. Also included are most of the letters from the last three years of his life, the correspondents include John Nash, Edward Bawden, John Piper, Helen Binyon and Paul Nash. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Loosely laid in, is an invitation to the book launch, the original prospectus and a handwritten letter from the publisher. Housed in the fine, structurally sound slipcase. A beautiful production.
