25 x 32cm 284pp very good hardback with mid-blue cloth boards, the word Ravilious emblazoned on the front in red and white. Has a foreword by Brian Sewell and contributions from Barry and Saria Viney, Christopher Whittick and Simon Lawrence. Colour plus black and white reproductions throughout. Eric William Ravilious was a British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver. He grew up in Sussex, and is particularly known for his watercolours of the South Downs, Castle Hedingham and other English landscapes, which examine English landscape and vernacular art with an off-kilter, modernist sensibility and clarity. He served as a war artist, and was the first British war artist to die on active service in World War II when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland.

Upper Denby, The Fleece Press, 2002, 283,(2) pag., richly illustrated with reproductions of Ravilioous war drawings and sketches, printed in 750 copies, original blue cloth, title in silver on spine, printed label to the frontcover, oblong quarto (fine copy). = The definitive account of Eric Ravilious's work as an Official War Artist during the final three years of his life. Between 1939 and 1942 he produced some 110 watercolours depicting British military subjects, including aircraft, ships, submarines, coastal defences and military installations, as well as a number of fine lithographs. The beautifully produced volume reproduces the complete series of wartime watercolours together with other work from the period, and includes over 280 letters, diary extracts and official memoranda, many previously unpublished. Edited by Anne Ullmann, Ravilious's daughter, the book provides an unusually intimate portrait of the artist's final years. Ravilious was tragically killed in September 1942 when his aircraft disappeared off the coast of Iceland during a search-and-rescue mission. Ravilious at War rapidly went out of print and has become the standard reference for this crucial period of his career. A lovely copy of this important and highly sought-after Fleece Press publication.
