Failure to learn to read leads to failure in moth other areas of education and indeed in life generally. For this reason there has been more research into and more written about reading difficulties than any other aspect of reading. Jessie Reid has selected papers which have appeared in journals and books in North America and Britain which will provide the student and teacher with a guide to the basic factors involved in reading difficulties. There are five sections. 1: Definition and scope explores the terminology and extent of reading problems: 2: Social, cultural and emotional correlates examines some of the factors causing reading difficulty: 3: Specific reading difficulties looks at the dyslexia question and other possible factors: 4: Diagnosis and remedial treatments is the largest section and describes in detail diagnostic and remedial techniques: 5: Prevention explores potential methods of preventing reading failure. Most of the material has been written within the last ten years and several papers have not appeated in print before.
