First published in 1930, this book is the 1944, second printing of the second edition, revised and enlarged, 578 pages, 158 figures, as line drawings and b&w photos. The author was the Superintendent Scientific Officer, Department of Scientific research… and Experiment, Admiralty, London. "The change which has taken place during the past ten or twenty years in the study of mechanical vibrations and sound is my excuse for writing this book when such treatises as those of Rayleigh and Lamb already exist. The indiscriminate use of the titles 'Sound' and 'Acoustics' is not surprising in view of the dictionary definitions to which I have referred. I have, however, in the present volume endeavored to reserve the use of the word 'acoustics' for that aspect of the subject more immediately connected with hearing. For want of a more appropriate word I have regarded 'sound' as referring to vibrations of all frequencies, audible or otherwise. This book has been thoroughly revised and new material added to bring it up to date. Since the first edition was published a large volume of literature has appeared relating to various aspects of the subject such as supersonics, hearing, noise, technical applications, etc. and some difficulty has been experienced in condensing this material into 'textbook' form. To compensate for deficiencies in this respect, references to many original papers have been given." VERY GOOD- HARDCOVER. Green cloth covers, worn at spine edges and corners of book, internally fine. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
