Dans cet ouvrage, Luys rapporte les résultats de ses études de reconstruction tridimensionnelle des structures cérébrales, à partir de dessins et de photographies. Il identifie des structures fondamentales du cerveau. Cet ouvrage marque le début des connaissances sur le thalamus et la fonction thalamique. Luys décrit le "centre médian" (noyau ventro-médial du thalamus), le "corps" (noyau subthalamique), décrit comme la substance grise accessoire des olives supérieures, et "l'olive supérieure". Son nom fut attaché à ces trois structures (éponymes). Luys décrit aussi les connections fibrillaires entre "la substance grise accessoire" et le "corps jaune" (globus pallidus). Par ailleurs, il entrevoit le rôle de ces structures. Jules Bernard Luys (1828-1897), né à Paris, fut l'élève de Robin. Il échoua à l'agrégation mais devint médecin des hôpitaux, chef de service à la Salpêtrière puis à la Charité, et enfin directeur de la maison de santé d'Ivry. Son oeuvre en neurologie est fondamentale. Il fut membre de l'Académie de médecine. Belle PROVENANCE : Théodore Flournoy (1854-1920), qui acheva ses études de médecine à Strasbourg, devint professeur de psychologie expérimentale de l'Université de Genève ; il fut un pionnier de la psychologie moderne.
