Ce Mémoire est particulièrement intéressant en ce sens qu'il commente en l'argumentant de façon parfaite la position des Évêques et autres nombreux opposants dans un Appel (dont le texte est reproduit intégralement dans le dernier des textes de ce volume) contre la bulle UNIGEITUS), lequel Appel demande la convocation d'un Concile, soutient que l'autorité d'un Concile aurait autorité sur celle du Pape ( qui a largement exprimé son opposition à ce Concile dans sa bulle de 1713 (UNIGENITUS), bulle dans laquelle il condamnait formellement les idées d'un des théoriciens du Jansénisme en vogue (Pasquier QUESNEL) mais aussi celles des partisans du Gallicisme . Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) was a French bishop and theologian renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a master French stylist. Court preacher to Louis XIV of France, Bossuet was a strong advocate for political absolutism and the divine right of kings. He argued that government was divinely ordained and that kings received sovereign power from god. Bossuet in this work, Relation sur le Quiétisme, positions himself against quietism, therefore, against François Fénelon (1651-1715) and Mme. Jeanne-Marie Guyon (1648-1717). Quietism is a set of contemplative practices that rose in popularity in France, Italy, and Spain during the late 1670s and 1680s, particularly associated with the writings of the Spanish mystic Miguel de Molinos, which were condemned as heresy by Pope Innocent XI. General Michel-Sylvestre Brayer (1769-1840) was a Grenadier commander who served throughout many campaigns of the Empire. When Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from Elba in 1815, General Brayer immediately rallied to Napoleon and marched all of his troops to Paris for support. Napoleon made Brayer a Count and Peer of France in recognition of his loyalty and then gave him command of a division and sent him to quell the insurgents of Maine-et-Loire. That June, Brayer served at the combat of Rocheservière against the Royalists. After Napoleon's second abdication, Brayer was proscribed by the vengeful Bourbons. He took refuge in Belguim, then Prussia, and finally the United States. He resided in Baltimore, Maryland for a period of time. This is an incredibly extravagant custom binding for the General Michel-Sylvester Brayer, with his armorial coat and initials. A friend of Napoleon. The work itself of Bossuet is pro-Catholic and rejects the practice of Quietism. Presents very well. Gift quality.
