Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding remains firm. Minor pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some moderate marking and tanning. Gilt lettering is slightly dulled.

Shackleton died during the course of the "Quest" expedition having reached South Georgia. It is a testimony to his leadership that the expedition nonetheless went on to carry out scientific work in the Weddell Sea, and on many Atlantic Islands (South Georgia, but also Elephant Island, St. Helena, Ascension amd the Cape Verde Islands). The present work gathers thirteen papers concerning the expedition s geological collections. Rosove describes the book as "Uncommon".

Gilt title on spine. 3 plates (including frontispiece) and illustrations in text from sketch maps, plans, etc. A very nice copy Rosove 313.A1, Taurus 113 Shackleton died on the "Quest" expedition after having reached South Georgia. Even with the tragedy, the Expedition pushed on and the present work gathers thirteen papers concerning the the expedition geological work. Nice non x-lib copies are much harder to find.

Burgundy cloth with publisher monogram on upper front cover, gilt lettered spine, xii, 161pp. Frontispiece, with view of Gough Island, and two plates, the first showing Dodoxylon, a fossil wood from South Georgia, and a second plate illustrating the Seismology of St. Paul's Rocks. With several in-text topographical maps. Light wear on boards, some bruising on spine ends, else near fine. The Natural History collections in the British Museum were presented by John Quiller Rowett on behalf of the Expedition. The collected reports, and scientific results, were previously published in the Geographical Journal and The Ibis, are published for the first time in one volume. Financed by his schoolfriend John QUiller Rowett, The Shackleton-Rowett Expedition (1921-22) would be Shackleton's last Antarctic project in the golden age of arctic exploration. The expedition ship, Quest, a converted sealing ship, proved to be too small for the task. After taking ill, Shackleton passed away onboard. His last diary entry reads: "The old smell of dead whale permeates everything", he wrote. "It is a strange and curious place . A wonderful evening. In the darkening twilight I saw a lone star hover, gem like above the bay." The expedition was taken over by Frank Wild. After the findings of Quest, there would be no other explorations into the arctic region of seven years.

First edition. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the original glassine dustwrapper. Photographic frontispiece and two further plates, 21 sketch maps (five of which are full-page), three figures and two graphs within the text. A fine copy, the binding square and tight, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with the bookplate of Clinton E. Geiser to the front pastedown, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the plain original glassine that has a couple of short tears without loss to the folds. This volume collects the bulk of the scientific results from the voyage of the Quest, during which Shackleton lost his life. (Taurus 113; Rosove 313.A1).
