Hardcover. Etat : Good+. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo. Harper and Brothers, New York. 1929. Xiv, 485 pgs . Illustrated with beautiful woodcuts including 12 tipped in mounted plates, including frontispiece, and numerous little black & white illustrations. #1405 of a limited edition of 1500. Signed on the limitation page by Clare Leighton. Bound in tan cloth and blue paper covered boards with paper label present to the spine. Spine lightly rubbed and darkened. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards lightly rubbed and worn. Tempestuous Eustacia Vye passes her days dreaming of passionate love and the escape it may bring from the small community of Egdon Heath. Hearing that Clym Yeobright is to return from Paris, she sets her heart on marrying him, believing that through him she can leave rural life and find fulfilment elsewhere. But she is to be disappointed, for Clym has dreams of his own, and they have little in common with Eustacia's. Their unhappy marriage causes havoc in the lives of those close to them, in particular Damon Wildeve, Eustacia's former lover, Clym's mother and his cousin Thomasin. The Return of the Native illustrates the tragic potential of romantic illusion and how its protagonists fail to recognize their opportunities to control their own destinies. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 484 pages.

Macmillan signed limited edition of Hardyâs sixth published novel. Octavo, bound in half vellum over boards with gilt titles to the spine, top edge gilt, frontispiece, with black and white woodcut illustrations. Signed by illustrator Clare Leighton on the colophon page. One of 1,500 copies. In very good condition with toning and bumping. Illustrated by Clare Leighton. The Return of the Native is Thomas Hardy's sixth published novel. It first appeared in the magazine Belgravia, a publication known for its sensationalism, and was presented in twelve monthly installments from January to December 1878. Because of the novel's controversial themes, Hardy had some difficulty finding a publisher; reviews, however, though somewhat mixed, were generally positive. In the twentieth century, The Return of the Native became one of Hardy's most popular and highly regarded novels.
