Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book details the development of the science of ornithology from the 18th century to the present day. The author, a leading expert in the field, traces the evolution of our understanding of birds, from the early work of Linnaeus to the groundbreaking research of the Darwinian era and beyond. The book explores the key ideas and debates that have shaped ornithology, including the development of classification systems, the study of bird anatomy and physiology, and the investigation of bird behavior and ecology. The author highlights the contributions of major figures in the field, such as John Gould, Alfred Russel Wallace, and Ernst Mayr, and discusses the impact of technological advances, such as the development of bird banding and DNA analysis, on our knowledge of birds. This book is a valuable resource for ornithologists, bird enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the history of science. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Thomas Lovejoy's name signed on the front free endpaper. Bowdler was a bird-classifier of the highest order, entirely in his prime at the time of this address to his colleagues in Hungary. He organized the massive collection of birds at the British Museum of Natural History during the aftermath of the great generation of hunter/collector/explorers. His colleagues named several species of bird in his honor. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos.
