Light rubbing to corners and high spots where raised bands meet boards with the worst being a 4cm area to bottom band at its intersection with the rear board. Else in lovely condition. Gilt bright and intact on all three sides of text block. Small bookplate affixed to verso of FFEP. Riviere and Son stamp also to verso of FFEP. Tipped in bibliographic information. Occasional marginal stains. Hardcover. Octavo. [4] + [xxxiv], [1], 2-270 pp. + [tipped-in errata sheet]. When the work was originally printed, the Olliers hadn't read the work which they'd agreed to publish, titled Laon and Cynthia. Upon reading it, they determined it couldn't possibly be published with it's themes of incest and assertions concerning religion; especially with the entirety of the city abuzz about Shelley's living situation which fit contemporary definitions of incest. A series of edits and deletions occurred to erase any and all incestuous suggestions. The resulting iteration of the work: a revised edition utilizing some sheets from the intended original printing, and a new title. The revised work retained Shelley's extensive preface and poetic dedication of the work to his wife, Mary. Rebound by Riviere and Son in Full Calf. Five Raised Bands and Gilt Detailing to Spine First Edition, Revised Edition, Second Issue with Correctly Dated "1818" Title Page [Ashley Library V 67-68, Granniss 44, Tinker 1895].
