Ajouter au panierOctavo, illustrated yellow boards (hardcover), 246 pp. Good, with small piece of cello tape applied to corner of upper cover. From Foreword: Western North Carolina is a many storied country of wondrous mountains and valleys. So rich is it in beauty, in history and in folklore, that it needs a very special chronicler. Such is John Parris who was born in the Western North Carolina town of Sylva in 1914. He worked his way as a newspaperman of distinction from Raleigh to New York, to London, to the beaches of the North African invasion, back to London, back to New York and then completed the circuit by coming home to his mountains to write. Nothing in the mountains of Western North Carolina is an old or jaded story to John Parris. It is all new and fresh and wonderful. And he writes about it in a sensitive, nostalgic style which has made his column for the Citizen-Times one of the most popular and widely read of all newspaper features. This book, which The Citizen-Times is proud to publish, is a collection of some of the best stories John Parris has written of the land which we who are privileged to live here cherish and revere. Ajouter au panierFour volumes, boxed set. Octavo, softbound (stiff, illustrated wrappers), 246 pp; 259 pp; 372 pp; 372 pp. Mountain Bred Tales appears unread; the others are Very Good, with wear to spines. From box: It was five or six years ago, but the scene stands engraved in my memory: a small, weathered general store, fast by a bustling mountain stream, its access a gravel road. It was along this road we traveled with John Parris and it was here we stopped to complete the menu for an autumn picnic. Into the store went John Parris. Some time later he emerged with some onions, and the storekeeper, and the material for another of his famous columns on mountain times, people and places. To say that this writer knows everybody in our end of the state would be an exaggeration, but not a great one. And in his view, there's a story in almost every native and every cove, just waiting to be told. John Parris is a master storyteller, his use of words a painstaking search for those that fit perfectly. After a distinguished career as a foreign correspondent, he has found contentment in writing of his homeland, interpreting, as only he can, the moods of the high hills and documenting the pride and the character of those sufficiently blessed to be born there. These four books -- "Roaming the Moutains" -- are testimony to what we have said here. Their acceptance is legendary -- all original printings were quickly sold out, all have strong appeal to collectors. This collection doesn't need any additional incentive, but the original wild flower illustrations by the author's wife, Dorothy Luxton Parris, appear as in the original works.
