Two albums containing almost 400 hand coloured and exquisitely cut illustrations printed on fine paper. All the items are unmounted and loosely inserted into the albums which are probably of a later date: the larger album, 230 x 210 mm. [c. 1760]; the smaller, 165 x 240 mm. [c. 1800]. The themes are varied: rococo designs of act…ivities, pastimes, gardens, characters, etc. A unique and attractive collection. Many are reminiscent of the work of Martin Engelbrecht [1684 â" 1756] who created model theatre designs and decorative albums; others probably cut from mid-18th century chinoiserie pattern books. Of probable German or French origin, image searches find very few examples which can be compared with these although many pattern books were printed in the eighteenth century. Of particular charm are the many depictions of anthropomorphic monkeys: in harlequinade, playing musical instruments, dancing, painting, writing, at toilette, etc. There are also dwarves and battling giants or gods. If these last particular images had been common, they should have been relatively easy to identify from image searches, but we have found no comparable designs.
