With eight somewhat repulsive (it's all a matter of taste) collotype illustrations by Brook-Greaves. Heavy rubbing through cover cloth at lower corners; extremities otherwise lightly-to-moderately worn. Spine cloth slightly faded and with a couple of very small darkened spots. Few tiny scars to illustration adjoining p. 85 where illustration adhered to and then pulled away from text page. Interior otherwise clean and tight.

Full leather (polished calf) covers with gilt border decoration and gilt panelling and lettering to spine. Five raided bands to spine. Leather scratched and worn to edges. Corners worn. Marbled end papers and gilt edging to tops of all pages. There is a page prior to half title with presentation details form EC Hawtry, the Headmaster of Eton, completed by hand with the details of the recipient, dated 1852 (amended from 1841). All edges gilt. Red border to text on each page. First page has some foxing but otherwise clean and bright. When securely packed this item will weigh in the region of 1343g. Leather quite dried with subsequent flaking along spine, margins rather scuffed, small circular blemish to upper cover, contemporary manuscript library label at spine crown and ownership signature to front free endpaper, early 20th-century photo-illustrated ex libris of Abigail Treat Holt to front pastedown, else a Good to Very Good, internally clean and sound copy. Translated attributed to the young American jurist John Duer (1782-1858), who at the time of publication would have just completed a brief stint studying law at the firm of Alexander Hamilton.
