Several early German developments culminated in the adoption of the Bergmann M.P. 18,I in 1918. The new term "submachine gun", coined in America, soon came to denote any light, portable pistol-caliber automatic weapon of the type called a Maschinnenpistole in Germany. The vindictive Treaty of Versailles, which has been called the first step toward WWII, imposed severe restrictions on the Interwar German military. In spite of this, numerous new submachine guns were designed and produced in Germany and as the book shows, many of these were used alongside M.P.38s and MP40s right through WWII. The M.P.38 was adopted in 1938 and was superseded by a somewhat simpler version called the MP40 in 1940. The MP40 was manufactured in five variations by three firms - ERMA, Haenel, and Steyr - until 1944, when it was phased out in favor of the Italian Beretta SMG and the MP44.
