Ajouter au panier8vo. First edition. Original brick red cloth, gilt. Jacket design by Robin Darwin. Neat ink ownership near the top edge of the front pastedown under the jacket flap. Contents clean. Clipped d/w is slightly tanned and faded on the spine, a little rubbed and nicked at the extremities, and with a tape repair to the head of the spine. Near fine in very good + d/w. A 'novel of life in a Preparatory Boarding School which takes the reader into the inner thoughts and activities of all the inmates [.] Against the typical background of paper-chases, football games, and fishing expeditions on the headmaster's birthday, glides the graceful and ambiguous figure of Sparrow the adolescent who has been admitted in mid-term. With his sophistication and assurance, Sparrow brushes aside all school tradition; and masters and boys are equally left in dazzled helplessness. The consequences provide an episode that ranks high in the literature of schoolboy experience.' Philip Toynbee (1916-1981) was educated at Rugby until, like his friend Esmond Romilly at Wellington, he ran away. Uncommon especially in the jacket.

Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat de la jaquette : Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London: Putnam 1941). First UK Edition. Publisher's dark salmon-pink boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Spine tips pushed. Mild foxing to the text-block edges which has just crept into the interior in places. No inscriptions. Overall a VG++ copy. The VG++ dustwrapper is complete with a slightly toned spine and the slightest of wear/ miniscule loss to the head and tail of the spine. A much nicer copy than normally seen of this rare novel of life in a Preparatory Boarding School with its usual unpremeditated, unfairness of the masters to the boys, the boys' deliberate persecution of each other, and the habitual savagery of the boys to the masters cable of turning them into neurasthenics and drunkards. Photographs/scans available upon request.
