The author provides a detailed description of Bewick's humble beginnings, his early talent, his years of apprenticeship, his partnership with Ralph Beilby, and his role in creating famous publications such as A General History of Quadrupeds and A History of British Birds. Additionally, the author creates a breathtaking catalog of Bewick's most famous and sought-after works, including The Wild Bull, The Whitley Large Ox, The Kyloe Ox, a zebra, an elephant, a tiger, and a lion. The book offers a deep dive into Bewick's artistic techniques and his use of woodcuts, which were a groundbreaking technique at the time. Furthermore, the author outlines several instances where Bewick's art was featured on the banknotes of the day. This book offers comprehensive coverage of the life and work of an artistic genius. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Very slight occasional scattered foxing. Frontis. port. and four further portraits of Thomas Bewick. Profusely illustrated with wood engravings, largely by Thomas and John Bewick. First edition thus. As the bookseller and publisher Emerson Charnley explains in his opening Advertisement, Bewick himself had 'no interest whatever, in the work now submitted to the public', which is a version of the Select Fables first published in 1784: Charnley purchased the blocks from this work, 'as well as many others engraved by the Messrs. Bewick' (Advertisement p. ii) in 1818 or 1819, and 'issued the hybrid Select Fables of 1820' without Bewick's involvement (Tattersfield p. 621). As Gordon N. Ray reports, 'Bewick deplored this well-produced volume, which to his mind could only serve "to feed the whimsies of bibliomanists," but he tolerated its publication. Though some of the engravings hardly rise above chapbook level (a number of them are copies), the book is useful as a record of his work before he achieved his mature style'. The cuts for Select Fables are notable amongst Bewick's early work: 'the engraving here began to show real accomplishment in design and the handling of texture, light, and shade' (ODNB). A handsome Riviere & Sons binding. Tattersfield TB 2.574; Ray 52. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Size: xl, 332pp.
