Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 122pp. Marbled endpapers. Bound in full black leather with gilt decorations and lettering (boards are worn, rubbed at edges, chipped at spine ends). Internally neat, clean and bright, with some faint spotting on prelims only. The final page is oversized - it appears to be a printing fault - and the edges have been neatly folded in, in an unusual manner. Firmly bound. Various editions of 'selections from the new versions of the psalms [of David] were published in the early to mid 19th century, often selected for use in specific parishes or groups of churches. This edition includes a generous selection of psalms and verses from psalms designed and published for use at St Mary, Newington (on Kennington Park Road, just near Kennington Tube Station). Although once popular, such psalms books would have been distributed to parishioners (this one was sold by the parish Sextons from the vestry room) and likely heavily used, and are now very hard to find.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Scarce. Bound in decorative 19th century straight-grained morocco, red, tooled, gilt, with raised bands, deep blue waxed endpapers, tooled and gilt-framed pastedowns. Light wear to the edges and hinges, gilding a bit dulled, but firm and pleasing. An early owner penned verbatim certain morning and evening prayers derived from the works of Rev. Thomas Wilson (Bishop of Sodor and Man) upon the first and last blanks, a neat remnant of Anglican devotion. PROVENANCE: 19thC armorial bookplate of Thomas Robinson. Title-page inscribed at top margin, "Margaret Robinson. Presented by the Rev. W. Firth. July the 24th, 1823." What relation Margaret Robinson was to Thomas Robinson, and what relation Rev. W. Firth was to R.A. Firth is unclear. R.A. Firth also appears to have (possibly?) initialed the title-page. List of subscribers includes the Bishop of Norwich (Henry Bathurst), Sir Moore Disney and Lady Disney. The metrical rhyming version of the Psalms here is that of Brady and Tate first published in 1696; not the whole psalter but a selection. Printed music leaves were interspersed throughout the book by the binder. The proper Appendix of select hymns begins about mid-way in the book. Lovely copy. xix + 92 pages + 18 unnumbered music plates. Includes indexes. 9.4 x 6 inches. May require additional postage. This listing was made by a small independent book shop. We carefully inspect every single book we list and give accurate descriptions. If you require we will promptly send pictures of listed books upon request. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.
