Rebound in period 3/4 red leather over marbled paper boards, with gilt ruling. Gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine. All edges of the book block in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original gilt-stamped red pebbled cloth wrappers (binding) as issued, bound in at the rear (front, back cover and spine). This is the fourth printing thus of this collection of British humorous sketches by Alfred Crowquill, based on the original satirical images first created by Robert Seymour. Between 1834 and 1836 noted British illustrator and visual satirist Robert Seymour (1798-1836) created a series of separately-issued humorous lithographic sketches, depicting various characters in British society. Seymour accompanied each of these images with a quote or comment, captioned below. In 1841, only a few year after Seymour's untimely suicide, fellow British humorist and illustrator Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872), under his pseudonym Alfred Crowquill, wrote a series of short literary scenes ("illustrated in prose and verse") based on each of Seymour's individual sketches. This work, includes a total of 86 engraved plates (including an engraved half-title page) featuring Seymour's original images, interleaved and bound next to their respective new stories. The initial text by publisher Henry G. Bohn includes a biographic notice on the life and work of Robert Seymour, and a list of plates. Binding with light rubbing to extremities, including the hinges of the spine. Front hinge has been repaired and lightly reinforced. Interior front cover with starting at the gutter. The top of the title page bear an extremely faded period inscription in ink to a previous owner. Pages throughout with some sporadic minor to light foxing. Most images clean. Book block quite tight. Binding in and interior in very good- to very good. Binding protected in modern mylar.
