Publisher: One of the earliest English books on naval architecture, preceded only (if we ignore Deane's manuscript treatise) by Edmund Bushell's Complete Ship-wright (1664) and John Hardingham's The Accomplish'd Ship-Wright and Mariner (1706). Sutherland came from a family of shipwrights and was the author of another book on shipbuilding: Britain's Glory, or Ship-building Unvail'd, first published in 1717.
