DESCRIPTION - This volume contains all but four of Chesnutt's pieces of short fiction - excluding the sixteen tales and short stories in The Conjure Woman and those in The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color Line, both previously published. The anecdotes have never been published prior to this volume and the tales and short stories appear for the first time in book form. Charles W. Chesnutt was the first black American writer to receive major attention from literary critics. William Dean Howells likened the skill of his writing to the works of Maupassant, Turgenev, and Henry James. Chesnutt was published in the leading periodicals of the nineteenth century, as well as by Doubleday and Harper's. His work made an important contribution to nineteenth-century literature. He was among the first to create characters, white and black, that did not fit any previous stereotypic pattern. His depiction of blacks, in particular, added a realistic dimension to those of Thomas Dixon and Joel Chandler Harris's Uncle Remus - type characterizations. Chestnutt's fresh and utilitarian use of humor and satire, as well as his exploitation of the elements and culture of the low country of North Carolina, rightfully place him as a major American literary figure. He was also a writer who had a deep commitment to his craft and to his people at a time when blacks were under intensive attack in the Post-Reconstruction era and no black writers and very few whites dared to make writing their sole means of support. inventory #24308 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.
