He was also the director of the McEver Visiting Writers program at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the director of Poetry@Tech. His first collection of poetry, Memory's Handgrenade, was published in 1972. His other collections of poetry include To the Left of Time, New and Selected Poems of Thomas Lux: 1975-1995, God Particles, Child Made of Sand, The Street of Clocks, and From the Southland. In 1994, he won the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for the collection Split Horizon.
