In order to make a spintronic device, the primary requirement is to have a system that can generate a current of spin-pola…rized electrons, as well as a system that is sensitive to the spin polarization. Most spintronic devices also have a unit in between these two that changes the current of electrons depending on the spin states. Candidates for such devices include injection schemes based on magnetic semiconductors and ferromagnetic metals, ferromagnetic resonance devices , and a variety of spin-dependent pumps. Optical, microwave and electrical methods are also being explored .These devices could be used for low-power data transmission in spintronic devices or to transmit electrical signals through insulators.

Time resolve…d imaging allows for the determination of the effective domain wall mass and the underlying physical origins. In current-induced domain wall displacement experiments, the influence of edge roughness-induced pinning was identified as having a big influence on the critical current density that is needed to displace a domain wall in a magnetic micro- or nanowire. By applying a specially developed patterning method, the domain wall pinning at edge defects was highly reduced and the device performance was improved by a factor of four, compared to conventionally produced wires. Patterning methods for ferromagnetic half-metals were also developed and the spin structure of structured elements are characterized.

The details of the device fabrication strategies used and the analytical material characterization techniques, including scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, employed to study interfacial and surface chemistries are discussed. Here I also describe the experimental results on the study of spin transfer through localized current injection in spin valve nanomagnets.
