Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. This is the 1945 Reprint edition published by The Heritage Press of "The Story of Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier des Grieux" by The Abbé Prévost D'Exiles. The story was translated by Helen Waddell, and the illustrations, including frontispiece and title page line drawing were done by Pierre Brissaud. The book is quite lovely, issued in a quarter-bound format: paper-covered boards with dramatically colored marbled effect - and a lush-looking, brown, faux-leather spine; the spine has gilt lettering against a dark brown panel, bordered by a thin gilt thin. The top edge of the text-block is dyed a reddish brown. Measuring approximately 7" x 9 3/4", and having xiv + 155 pages, this elegant book would add a handsome decorative effect to your room - to say nothing of the pleasure to be derived from reading this French story of lost love and society's more dubious pleasures. It is a classic 'bildungsroman' (a coming-of-age story). ******************************************** This book is marvelously well preserved : bright and attractive with near-negligible signs of handling. This is because the slipcase , which has considerable wear about its edges, has done its job admirably. ******************************************* TITLE : The Story of Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier des Grieux / AUTHOR : The Abbé Prévost D'Exiles (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, 1697 - 1763) - French priest, author, and novelist / TRANSLATOR : Helen Waddell (Helen Jane Waddell, 1889 - 1965) Irish poet, translator and playwright as well as an accomplished scholar and literary all-about. / ILLUSTRATOR : Pierre Brissaud (1885 - 1964) A Collected French Art Deco illustrator, painter, and engraver who also illustrated many books. / IMPRINT : The Heritage Press / PLACE : New York / DATE : ( @1945 ) [1945] / EDITION : Reprint. Trade Reissue, after a limited edition of 1500 copies / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Illustrated hardcover, issued for the Heritage Press Club (or Society if you will); contains 8 color illustrations with blank backs (including frontispiece) plus one line drawing which appears on the title page.xiv + 155 pages; approx. 7" x 9 3/4", quarter bound format with marbled paper-covered boards, and deep brown, faux-leather spine with gilt lettering agains a dark brown panel. the panel has a thin gilt line border.top edge of the text-block is dyed reddish brown. Plain uncolored end-papers; slip case colored reddish brown. ************************************ CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD PLUS -- SLIPCASE : GOOD ONLY -- this is a previously owned book that remains clean, bright and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- The spine has just barely perceptible nicking at the extremities, else the spine is bright with bright gilt lettering; board marbling is bright - boards display negligible signs of handling - corner tips are nice and square. / BINDING -- Solid - tight. / INTERIOR -- I spotted on small spot underneath one of the pictures (this was a production effect and the spot Is integral with the paper. Else, the interior is clean and free of marking. No writing or signatures. / SLIPCASE - Rough - it has considerable wear about the edges (chipping nicking, small loss, etc. Edges also display a bit of splitting. But the case has done its job and will continue to protect the book itself from wear.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fair. Illustrated Edition. SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR! "The Story of Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier des Grieux" by Abbe Prevost D'Exiles. Published in 1935 by the Heritage Press. SUPER RARE to find this signed version! (I could not find another one for sale). SIGNED by Illustrator Pierre Brissaud. "This is a tale of passion and betrayal, of delinquency and misalliance, which moves from early 18th-century Paris - with its theatres, assemblies, and gaming-houses - via prison and deportation to a tragic denouement in the treeless wastes of Louisiana. It is one of the great love stories, and also one of the most enigmatic: how reliable a witness is Des Grieux, Manon's lover, whose tale he narrates? Is Manon a thief and a whore, the image of love itself, or a thoroughly modern woman? Prevost is careful to leave the ambiguities unresolved, and to lay bare the disorders of passion." Book is in Fair condition. Slipcase, if it came with one, is missing. Book has some damage on the spine at the top - most of the spine is split along the front cover as well as parts of the spine is missing near the top. Spine has darkened & a good amount of rubbing. Corners are bumped a little bit. Inside front cover has a small break in the hinge. Penciled note "signed by illustrator" on front flyleaf.
