His viewpoint is explained in the preface. The Story of Plymouth, Michigan is a history of the community from 1824 when the first settlers arrived. Original sources are used to describe the naming of the township, the settlers' relations with the Potawatomie Indians, and the wildlife abundant in Plymouth when the settlers arrived. Men of prominence in the community in the early days, Plymouth's role in the Underground Railway during the Civil War, the community in the year the village was incorporated, and Plymouth's prominent position in the Prohibition movement are depicted. One chapter covers early economic developments, including the era when Plymouth was the air~rifle capital of the world. It also tells about the Plymouthite who went to Hollywood and made a fortune in real estate, Henry Ford's connection with Plymouth, and the automobile factory which once operated here. The tragic railroad wreck of 1907, and the days when Plymouth was a bustling railroad center with a busy roundhouse, are described. There is a chapter on Plymouth in the gay '90's, recounting horse~racing at the track, and fun at the midway, at Plymouth Fairgrounds, as well as other activities and amusements in the days of wooden sidewalks and plank roads. Plymouth from 1900 to 1930 is covered in a chapter which includes the visit of Carry Nation to the village, the law suit involving Phoebe Patterson, Michigan's first woman Justice of the Peace; the Sunday movie controversy; Plymouth during Prohibition days; and the period when sit~down strikes were often in the news. A chapter on Plymouth in the 1930's relates how the community managed during the great depression, and describes the days of the W.P.A. in the city. A chapter on Plymouth in the 1940's portrays the city's first woman Mayor. It covers, in detail, the fight which embroiled the entire community when the City Commission was recalled. Sections on religion, education and culture in Plymouth, including the history of the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, are included. The major fires in Plymouth history, the development of the city's own water system~and why it was abandoned in 1971~are recounted. The book contains pages of pictures, maps, a bibliography and an index.
