First separate edition, complete in 4 issues: a comprehensive paper on Shehri, a Modern South Arabian language spoken by a small native population in the coastal towns and mountains upland from Salalah in the Dhofar Governorate in southwestern Oman. With an estimated 25,000 speakers, Shehri is one of six endangered languages that are spoken by small populations inhabiting the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen, Oman, and Socotra Island. - Includes a scholarly introduction to Shehri phonetics and grammar as well as a Shehri-German glossary in Latin type. Further, a group of folk tales in Shehri with German translation, allegedly dictated by a native Shehri speaker, some of which survive in the Mehri language as well. These studies were prepared by the renowned Austrian orientalist and linguist Maximilian Bittner (1869-1918), who published extensively on Semitic languages. - Unopened.
