Structure of matter series, Maria Goeppert Mayer, advisory editor. Volume One has badly torn front and rear jacket panels, volume two NO jacket. NOTE: These two volumes were products of Fritz London's American emigration (he taught at Duke) and were much admired. Charles Squire called them "a lasting monument to him" not only of "enormous value to scientists" but also full of the excitement of the years of discovery in the mid-1930s. After emigrating to England in 1933, Fritz London came under the influence of Franz Simon and shifted his research to cryogenics. He returned to Paris from 1936-39 where he revived "the forgotten Bose-Einstein condensation" and applied it "strikingly - to the superfluidity of liquid helium." The previous owner was a close friend and collaborator of Fritz London in the work on superfluidity and the two-fluid model in Paris (mentioned here in Felix Bloch's comments on page ix, and Fritz London's preface on page xii of volume two). London, Tisza, and Landau are credited with the essential discoveries in this field.
