Facsimile edition of the Tacuinum Sanitatis, a medieval health handbook originally compiled by Ibn Butlan in the 11th century. This edition reproduces the manuscript Codex Vindobonensis Series Nova 2644, housed in the Austrian National Library. The publication consists of two volumes. The facsimile volume includes 107 folios, bound in beige full leather with blind-stamped decorative frames on the covers and raised bands on the spine. The commentary volume contains 156 pages with scholarly analysis and translations in French and Dutch, bound in half beige leather with brown cloth boards. Both volumes are presented in the publisher's slipcases. The spines of the leather bindings are slightly discolored due to sun exposure but otherwise in perfect condition. See pictures. This is copy number 1634 of a limited edition of 1800. 4180g.

Each measuring approximately 9¾" x 13¾". *Tacuinum Sanitatis in Medicina* fully reproduced in color, and the Commentary with a few pages of black and white plates. Faux leather (?) over boards; the Commentary is faux leather and paper over boards. Facsimile with a sunned spine and a bit of sunning on the front cover, Commentary with the spine discolored, the page edges a bit soiled and foxed, and the front endleaves with two thin, very light vertical stains, both volumes with very light wear including a couple of edge nicks, overall a very good set lacking the slipcase. (As the facsimile is reproduced down to the stains on the "irregularly" trimmed leaves, the sunning and discoloration on the binding look less like "wear" and more like "age" than it might on other volumes.) Commentary with an introduction and transcription by Franz Unterkircher, as well as a foreword by Josef Stummvoll. The commentary's preliminary text is in German, and the transcriptions are printed in Latin, German, and English, with translation by Franz Unterkircher, Heide Saxer, and Charles H. Talbot. Issued as Volume VI and VI* in the *Codices Selecti* series.

Entstehung: Entstehung: Vermutlich als Auftragsarbeit der Familie Cerutti von zwei Malern Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts in Verona angefertigt. Der im 11. Jahrhundert sehr bekannte Arzt Elbochasim de baldach (Ibn Botlan) hat das Tacuinum neben mehreren anderen medizinischen Werken verfasst und damit große Berühmtheit erlangt. Im 13. Jahrhundert wurde es ins Lateinische übersetzt, wodurch es auf die abendländische Medizin nachhaltigen Einfluss ausgeübt hat. Dieses aufwendig bebilderte heilkundliche Handbuch war vor allem für den Laien gedacht, genauer für die Dame des Hochadels oder der reichen Patrizierfamilie, die sich ein so kostspieliges Nachschlagewerk" für die Haushaltsführung, das Gesundheitswesen und die Krankenpflege leisten und es auch lesen konnte. Die Besonderheit der bildlichen Darstellungen liegt darin, dass die einzelnen Objekte nicht isoliert abgebildet werden, sondern wie auch im Text der Zusammenhang mit dem Menschen im Vordergrund steht. Immer wird dessen Beschäftigung mit den jeweiligen Gewächsen, Tieren und anderen Dingen gezeigt. Das Tacuinum ist in dieser Sparte eine der schönsten und am reichsten ausgestatteten Handschriften der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek. Faksimile + Kommentar. Geprägter Ledereinband. Nur in der Erstauflage von 1969 sind die Seiten dem Original entsprechend von Hand randbeschnitten. Limitierte Auflage: insgesamt 700 Exemplare. Sehr schönes Exemplar.
