The newly liberated working class - that was how we saw the results of the 1945 Labour victory - the newly liberated working class needed an Epic Poetry. I undertook to write it" (introduction). Maurice Carpenter was, like Gascoyne and George Barker, a graduate of the Parton Street Bookshop school, and author of A Rebel in the Thirties (1976). The painter Kit Barker was George's younger brother.
