The publication is #208 of a limited quantity of 360 hand-numbered copies of facsimiles of early manuscripts of The Targum Onkelos, held at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Each page is b/w photographic reproduction in high quality offset printing, measuring approximately 12.5 x9" on average. The Targum Onkelos is a basic translation of the content of the Torah (The Five Books of Moses) into the Babylonian Aramaic of the day, and has served as a valuable tool for the teaching and studying of the Torah and the history of Jewish scholarship for centuries. The work is traditionally attributed to Onkelos, possibly identified as Aquila of Sinope, a Roman nobleman who converted to Judaism in Tannaic times (c. 35120 CE). Title pages in both Hebrew and English. The publication includes a scholarly summary of the contents of the facsimiles in Hebrew, with a loose sheet containing its translation into English, laid in at the back of the book. Each volume of the set contains an index of its contents in Hebrew at the front. Text in Hebrew and English. Bindings with some rubbing and light bumping to the heads and tails of spines. Minor scratching and smudges to the covers of some of the volumes. Two and a half inches of cloth curled back from the middle of leather of volume one. Some light rubbing and abrasions to the hinges of some spines. Library stamps at the top and bottom of the book blocks. Interiors with library bookplates and sleeves at interior front and back covers. Bindings in good+ to very good-, interiors in near fine condition overall.
