A neat name and place inscription to the upper front endpaper of each volume. The text supported by numerous engravings. Original publisher's green cloth - finely ribbed and with gilt embossed titles to the spines. A few leaf corners have been turned in volume 2. Some rubbing to the cloth corners and head/tails of the spines with light associated nicks/chipping. Some rubbing to the joints - mostly to volume 2. with a 1.4cm split to the upper joint of volume one. Some pencil dash marks to the margins which would rub out if they caused you adequate offence and some spotting to the leading fore-edges. Over all, a very good or very good minus set of this the 4th edition.

[DICTIONARY OF SCIENTIFIC BIOGRAPHY, Vol. V, p. 335]. The half title page of this copy is SIGNED and dated (October 20, '98) by the important geologist Ernest Howe (1875-1932). Howe graduated from Yale (class of 1898) and went on to Harvard where he earned his M.A. in 1899 and Ph.D. in 1901. Howe went to work for the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) as an assistant geologist in 1900. In 1906 he was appointed geologist of the Isthmian Canal Commission. Howe surveyed the Canal Zone and produced a report for the Commission on his findings in 1907. Howe was a member of the Royal Geographic Society of London's expedition to the upper Amazon. For many years he was a consulting geologist for various gold mining operations in California. He was associated as part owner or director with the North Star Mines Company, the Champion mines, the Round Mountain Neocene Drift Placer Mine, and West Point Consolidated Mines, Inc., among others. In 1920 the Mexican government called on Howe to reorganize their geological survey. He also served as editor of THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF SCIENCE from 1926 until his death. Howe's papers are housed at Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. His son, the diplomat Walter Howe from whose library this came, served as U.S. Ambassador to Chile from 1958-61. Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Oversize Hardcover (thick).
