First page present is the title page. Text block complete and still tight - 232 pages. No date printed anywhere, but seems to be the 1783 edition.Small chip, no text, missing from title page. The name E. Berrett, neatly signed on the title page. First page of dedication to Joseph Willard has the name 'Eliza Berrett No 9 Cherry Street' signed at the top. Final page has a closed tear running nearly all the way across it. Inside front cover has several pencil notes from previous bookseller, including Evans #16261. Dodd was a clergyman who, as wikipedia puts it, dabbled in forgery. He was eventually hanged for his crimes, in 1777. Please email with questions or to request photos. Scarce work. With a vignette title page to each work. Written by William Dodd, an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters who lived extravagantly. He committed forgery in an effort to clear his debts, and was caught and convicted. Despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, in which he received the assistance of Samuel Johnson, he was hanged at Tyburn in 1777. This volume includes: Thoughts in Prison; in Five Parts, Viz. The Imprisonment, The Retrospect, Public Punishment, The Trial, Futurity, 1823. The author's own account of his time in prison with reference to his imprisonment and the conditions, the retrospection of his actions, punishment and the public aspect, the trial, and his future. To which is added his last prayer, the convict's address to his unhappy brethren; and other miscellaneous pieces with some account of the author. Reflections on Death, 1823. Writings from the author after his trial, in the knowledge that his punishment would be death. Bound by Seton, Edinburgh. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Library sticker to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpapers. Bound by Seton, Edinburgh. Very Good. book.
