Ajouter au panierAntique print, titled: ''T.104.'' - Tab. 104: Anatomical study of the tibia (shinbone) and fibula (calf bone), the two primary bones of the lower leg.The tibia, shown in Figures 1 and 2, is robust and triangular in cross-section, with a broad upper end (B) that articulates with the femur, forming the knee joint. The anterior bor…der is sharp and prominent, known as the shin ridge, and the medial malleolus (C) forms the inner ankle. The fibula, seen in Figures 3 and 4, is slender and lies laterally to the tibia. It does not participate in the knee joint but helps form the lateral malleolus (F) at the ankle. Both bones are shown with detailed surface textures, muscle attachment points, and interosseous borders that accommodate connective tissue between the bones. This illustration emphasizes structural differences and articulation points, important for understanding leg mechanics and movement. A later Dutch version of Govard Bidloo's most famous work, his monumental Anatomia humani corporis published in Amsterdam in 1685, containing 107 copperplate engravings. Like so many large and expensive anatomical atlases of the time, the work was not a financial success, and in 1690 he published a Dutch translation entitled, Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams, using the same plates. When this edition did not sell well either, Bidloo's publisher sold 300 of the extra printed plates to William Cowper, a noted English anatomist. Cowper published the plates with his own, English language text in Oxford in 1698 under the title, Anatomy of the humane bodies, without mentioning Bidloo or the artists of the original plates. Cowper went so far as to use Bidloo's engraved allegorical title page, amended with an irregular piece of paper lettered: "The anatomy of the humane bodies .," which fits over the Dutch title (see a comparison here). A number of vitriolic exchanges took place between Bidloo and Cowper, including several pamphlets published in each anatomist's defense. Cowper claimed, without much evidence presented, that the plates were not Bidloo's at all, but that they were commissioned by Jan Swammerdam (16371680) and that after his death Swammerdam's widow had sold them to Bidloo. The illustrations in Bidloos' work were drawn by Gerard de Lairesse (16401711) and engraved by Abraham Blooteling (16401690) and Peter van Gunst (1659?1724?).Reference: Choulant, L. Ajouter au panierAntique print, titled: ''T.82.'' - Tab.82: TThis anatomical plate illustrates the muscles and tendons of the anterior lower leg and dorsal foot, focusing on the extensors and their insertions. A. The anterior tibial muscle originates partly from the upper tibia and fibula and is connected to the outer surface of the shin. It run…s under the retinaculum (cut here) and inserts primarily on the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal, though sometimes also on the navicular. Near the foot, the tendon becomes cartilaginous and overlays a small sesamoid bone. B. The fibularis (peroneus) muscles have three portions: one inserts on the fifth metatarsal (supporting the pinky toe), another joins at the lateral ankle and inserts near the cuboid and lateral cuneiform, and the final joins the others but varies in height. D. The long extensor of the toes attaches at the upper tibia and fibula, then splits into four or more tendons passing under the retinaculum to the phalanges of the toes E. F. The short extensor of the toes, lying atop the foot, arises near the ankle and sends tendons (including a distinct one for the big toe) to the first and second joints of the toes. G. The extensor of the big toe, originating from the tibia, runs along the toe and inserts dorsally. The skeletal structures of the shin (I), calf (K), and foot (L) are shown exposed. This is a clear study of the extensor mechanism of the foot, important for understanding gait, dorsiflexion, and anatomical layering.
