Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 296 pages. Published in 1997. The author's third novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Orhan Pamuk's "Yeni Hayat" in a felicitous English translation. A masterpiece from a writer who seems incapable of writing a bad book. The single most successful modern novel to be published in Turkey. The title refers to the way a book transforms the protagonist's life in a magical way, a metaphor for the power of reading to change lives. Pamuk's books are censored and often banned outright in his native Turkey, a culture that has to strike a delicate balance between (Eastern) Islam and (Western) secularism. The threat to one's freedom makes writing even more urgent and turns talented writers into great ones. His most passionate critic/admirer in America, the late great novelist John Updike, chose "Snow" as the best novel of the year 2004, bar none. "I read a book one day and my whole life was changed" (Orhan Pamuk). An absolute "must-have" title for Orhan Pamuk collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Orhan Pamuk. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Pamuk's signature on this copy is fabulous, one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Signed copies of Pamuk's books are scarce and as such, have always been collectible. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003 for "My Name Is Red". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, the first Turkish writer to be so deservedly honored. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ORHAN PAMUK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0374221294. Signed by Author.

Ajouter au panierDust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. A splendid oblong folio edition measuring 15.5" x 12.25". Handsomely bound with finely woven burgundy linen cloth spine stamped brightly in gold and woven gray cloth boards. In a near fine dust jacket with photos of Yosemite on the front and rear panels. Price-clipped at the top of the inside from flap. Very clean and tight throughout; a near-fine copy with the photographer's signature, "Ansel Adams"(underscored), on the half-title page. A collector's copy. "Seeing these photographs together brought back the exhilaration of my youth, absorbing the beauty of both lichen and distant peak, the sound of wind and water, and the ever-present benediction of light." (Ansel Adams). Ansel Easton Adams (1902 1984) was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. He helped found Group f/64, an association of photographers advocating "pure" photography which favored sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph. He and Fred Archer developed an exacting system of image-making called the Zone System, a method of achieving a desired final print through a deeply technical understanding of how tonal range is recorded and developed during exposure, negative development, and printing. The resulting clarity and depth of such images characterized his photography.Adams was a life-long advocate for environmental conservation, and his photographic practice was deeply entwined with this advocacy. At age 12, he was given his first camera during his first visit to Yosemite National Park. He developed his early photographic work as a member of the Sierra Club. He was later contracted with the United States Department of the Interior to make photographs of national parks. For his work and his persistent advocacy, which helped expand the National Park system, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.Adams was a key advisor in establishing the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, an important landmark in securing photography's institutional legitimacy. He helped to stage that department's first photography exhibition, helped found the photography magazine Aperture, and co-founded the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. In addition to these posts, Strauss was a frequent guest conductor in opera houses and with orchestras internationally. In 1933 Strauss was appointed to two important positions in the musical life of Nazi Germany: head of the Reichsmusikkammer and principal conductor of the Bayreuth Festival. The latter role he accepted after conductor Arturo Toscanini had resigned from the position in protest against the Nazi Party.
