Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 762 pages. Published in 2001. The second novel in the author's "The Underworld USA" trilogy. One of James Ellroy's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents James Ellroy's "The Cold Six Thousand: The Underworld U. S. A. Trilogy". The second installment of the author's fictional history of modern America, as seen from Below, which in the author's world-view, is inextricably linked to the Top, the latter being nothing more than the political equivalent of money laundering. The first volume in the trilogy is "American Tabloid" (1995) while the concluding novel is "Blood's A Rover" (2009). "What glorious excess it is, as Ellroy continues to illuminate the twin impulses toward idealism and corruption that frame American popular and political culture. He deftly puts unforgettable faces and voices to the murkiest of conspiracy theories, and simultaneously mocks our eager assumption that such knowledge will make a difference" (Kelly Flynn). "Ellroy's prose is easy to absorb sentence by sentence, but monstrous as it acquires cumulative force over hundreds of pages" (The New Yorker Magazine). An absolute "must-have" title for James Ellroy collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed (initialled/"scrawled") in black ink-pen on the title page by James Ellroy. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of relatively few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JAMES ELLROY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0679403922. Signed by Author(s).

First edition (not stated). 88 pages. Hardcover: H 30.75cm x L 22.75cm. Blue padded cloth, dragon vignette and gilt lettering decorate front board, slight scuffing at spine ends and at tips of board corners. Edges toned; toning along margins of front and rear endpapers; a few small stains at lower gutter corners of front endpapers. Moisture staining at top fore-edge corners of last fifteen leaves or so causing a few tears and some associated peeling to leaves which does affect a few photos and some text. Slight mustiness to book. Binding slightly stressed at a few spots but still reasonably firm. Only a good copy but an uncommon US Navy cruisebook. OCLC locates copies at only two member institutions: Auburn University and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Maritime Research Center. Features very succinct Foreword by Captain John B. Moss with captioned b/w photographs throughout and brief text passages reviewing the USS Boxer's cruise to the Far East from January to June 1950. No publishing date specified but presumably issued late 1950. Ports of call include Hawaii, Tokyo Bay, Hong Kong, Subic Bay, Manila, Sasebo, Inchon Harbor, and Singapore. Also laid-in at front endpapers is a lightly stained and mildly wrinkled promotional foldout sheet for the United States Naval Institute 1966 Proceedings.

Opened only for signing. Personally hand signed directly to the full title page. NOT inscribed to anyone. NOT a tip in. NOT a bookplate. Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for many worry free years of reading/collecting! A former CIA officer and the creator of the hit TV series The Americans makes the case that America's policy towards Russia is failing--and we'll never fix it until we rethink our relationship. Coming of age in America in the 1970s and 80s, Joe Weisberg was a Cold Warrior. After briefly studying Russian in Leningrad, he joined the CIA in 1990--just in time to watch the Soviet Union collapse. But less than a decade after the first Cold War ended, a new one broke out. Russia changed in many of the ways that America hoped it might--more capitalist, more religious, more open to Western ideas. But US sanctions have crippled Russia's economy; and Russia's interventions have exacerbated political problems in America. The old paradigm--America, the free capitalist good guys, fighting Russia, the repressive communist bad guys--simply doesn't apply anymore. But we've continued to act as if it does. In this bold and controversial book, Joe Weisberg interrogates these assumptions, asking hard questions about American policy and attempting to understand what Russia truly wants. Russia Upside Down makes the case against the new Cold War. It suggests that we are fighting an enemy with whom we have few if any serious conflicts of interest. It argues that we are fighting with ineffective and dangerous tools. And most of all, it aims to demonstrate that our approach is not working. With our own political system in peril and continually buffeted by Russian attacks, we need a new framework, urgently. Russia Upside Down shows the stakes and begins to lay out that new plan, at a time when it is badly needed. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Kl.-8°, 13 x 10 cm. Original leather binding with intact brass clasp and colorful marbled edges. Both covers are loose and have been secured at the inner hinge with acid-resistant film pad. The leather is scuffed, front cover has scratches. Contains approximately 300 pages, of which 74 contain approximately 65 recipes (some double-sided), written in ink in a rather idiosyncratic handwriting. Fifteen pages at the back of the book contain notes (names, prices, etc., presumably butter sales? - see notes and photos). The endpapers and first pages are written on the front and back in pencil with names and some London addresses. The outside is in fair condition, the inside is still in good condition.
