Neuware - Written during the Nigerian-Biafran War of the late 1960s, The Trial of Christopher Okigbo boldly tackles questions of Pan-Africanism, the importance of art, and the struggle for independence. In the celestial courts of an imagined African afterlife, the answers may lead to blissful immortality or eternal damnation. After a fatal car accident, Hamisi wakes up in a strange land called After-Africa - an afterworld for all Africans who have died since history began. He soon finds out, however, that his place in the afterlife hangs in the balance. To be allowed to stay, Hamisi must participate in the absurd trial of the renowned poet and solider, Christopher Okigbo, who was recently killed on the front lines of the Nigerian-Biafran War. Okigbo's crime The offence of putting the military needs of society before his poetry. With the trial taking place in a magical football stadium capable of seating millions of dead souls, and with celebrity testimonies from Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, and Kwame Nkrumah, the stage is set for this bizarre debate. Although thoroughly bewilidered, if Hamisi fails in his defence of Okigbo, Hell awaits them both. The Trial of Christopher Okigbo is a surrealist examination into the responsibilities of art and war and their often uncomfortable coexistence.'[The Trial of Christopher Okigbo is] its own best proof that important political questioning and art are not mutually exclusive.' New York Times'Whether in speech or in writing, Mazrui dissected and unravelled Africa in a delightful manner.' Guardian.

"This provocative novel of ideas centres on the tragedy of Christopher Okigbo - a real person and a great poet who was killed fighting for Biafra in the Nigerian war. The 'trial' takes place in 'After-Africa', and Okigbo is tried on two counts: first, that he subordinated the vision of a unified Nigeria to the Biafran ideal; and second that he had betrayed his art by acting as an Ibo first and as a poet last. The central theme is cunningly interwoven with the stories of Hamisi, the Counsel for Salvation, a Kenyan Muslim in love with a Hausa woman, who is himself on trial for the sin of miscalculation in the 'Herebefore'; and Apolo-Gyamfi, the Counsel for Damnation, a brilliant Ghanaian who had died in a road accident while a student at Oxford, whose sin in the 'Herebefore' was impatience. The summing up and the final verdict on Christopher Okigbo, and the judgement on Hamisi and Apolo-Gyamfi themselves who are symbolic of some of the protagonists in the Nigerian Civil War, is unexpected and will produce much controversy about the book itself and the ideas involved". Book in excellent condition. Minor tear to the bottom of spine. No inscriptions.

Ajouter au panierEtat : Very good. Jacket design by Bennie Arrington (illustrateur). First printing. At the time of publication, 1971, the Kenyan-born political scientist and author was approached by Idi Amin to an appointment in the Ugandan government, which he refused, ending his teaching career at the largest Ugandan College, University of Makerere. The book is a novelization of Christopher Okigbo who died fighting for the independence of Biafra in the Nigerian Civil War, 1967. Okigbo's life was marked by a series of difficult decisions around his political ideals and artistic inclinations. Even his Nigerian Air Force bombs destroyed his autobiography, Pointed Arches in a raid of his home in Enugu, July 1967. With varying severity, similar struggles also marked Mazrui's life. Around the time of Okigbo's death, Mazrui was asked by John Okello to aid in drafting the Zanzibar revolutionary constitution during their fight for independence as a socialist republic. This is Mazrui's first novel. Very good dust jacket, light rubbing and wear to seams of spine with similar wear to edges and corners. Hardcover 5" x 7 1/2", beige cloth boards with gilt lettering in pictorial dust jacket, 145 pp.
