This book narrates the author's travels in Europe and the Middle East in the mid-1870s, a time of great political and social change in the region. The author, a journalist and writer, travelled to the Ottoman Empire at the height of the Eastern Question when the decline of the Ottoman Empire had started to affect European powers. The book provides a unique glimpse into the culture, politics, and everyday life of the region during this pivotal period. The author's focus is on the contrast between the crumbling Ottoman Empire and the rising power of Russia and Austria-Hungary, particularly in relation to the treatment of their respective Christian and Muslim populations. The book offers a rich exploration of the region's history, its geopolitical complexities, and its significance in shaping the broader historical context of the era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The author is particularly interested in the archaeological excavations of Dr. Heinrich Schliemann, who claimed to have discovered the site of ancient Troy at Hissarlik. The author also discusses the broader historical and literary context of the Trojan War, and the thematic depth of the Iliad and Odyssey. Ultimately, the author concludes that Troy, whether its physical location can be definitively determined or not, remains a powerful and evocative symbol of the human experience of war and loss. One very small nick to upper joint of Vol.2, some trivial light shelfwear, contents clean and fresh, generally an excellent example of this scarce work. Two Years of the Eastern Question is a two-volume historical work by Antonio Carlo Napoleone Gallenga, first published in 1877 by S. Tinsley in London. The book provides a firsthand account of the political and social unrest in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans during the mid-1870s, a period marked by the "Eastern Question" and the strategic competition between European Great Powers. The 'Eastern Question' refers to the diplomatic and political instability caused by the declining power of the Ottoman Empire (often called the "Sick Man of Europe") and the subsequent manoeuvring by powers like Britain, Russia, and the Habsburg Empire. Antonio Carlo Napoleone Gallenga (18101895) was a prominent Italian patriot, author, and journalist who spent much of his career in England. Often writing under the pseudonym Luigi Mariotti, he was a key figure in bridging Italian and British intellectual circles during the Risorgimento.
