In his letter, addressed to the President of the Saint Nicholas Society in New York William M. Clearwater, d'Ailly extends his "hearty greetings" to the members of the Saint Nicholas Society on the occasion of the society's anniversary. He apologizes for not being able to attend the dinner "but I hope to meet you on another visit to the United States of America." Signed "AJD" with his initials as Burgomaster (Mayor) of Amsterdam. Folded for mailing with minor creases to the edges. Near fine. The mayor of Amsterdam in the Netherlands from 1946 to 1956, Arnold Jan d'Ailly (1902-1967) was nicknamed "the flying mayor" as he promoted trade by flying to many foreign cities.
