Eliot (Harvard President, 1869-1909), to LeBaron Russell Briggs. 1 page, dated August 23, 1898, typed with holograpph addition and bold signature (minor separation at folds, some blotter offset. Wonderful letter begins with a humorous discussion of a replacement for a diploma for one E. Blake Barton, apparently eaten by "our own rats" (in Wadsworth House). He goes on to the more serious topic of awarding degrees to students who were volunteering for service in the Spanish-American War, with reference to precedent from the Civil War. Eliot was one of the truly great figures in the history of Harvard, serving forty years as President (1869-1909). LeBaron Russell Briggs, one of the great figures in the history of Harvard, Radcliffe, and the NCAA. Briggs was first Dean of Men at Harvard College, where he also served as dean of the faculty. He was also president of Radcliffe College and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

This letter, which includes one holograph correction, was written to a descendant of Elbridge Gerry regarding a challenge to a Massachusetts law prohibiting children under 14 from working on the stage, in part: "I am much obliged to you for sedning [sic] me your article on the 'Children of the Stage'.it covers the ground admirably and undoubtedly has produced many salutary effects on law and custom." Horizontal and vertical folds; near fine condition. American academic who became the president of Harvard in 1869.
