Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat de la jaquette : Dust Jacket. First Edition. (Oxford: Clarendon Press 1939). First UK Edition. Publisher's original original dark blue cloth (lettered in gilt to the spine) in the original dust wrapper. Contemporary owner signature of economist Weir M. Brown to the front paste-down otherwise a VG+ copy pushed at the base of the spine. The fragile price-clipped VG+ D/W is completely unrestored with a bit of wear, chipping and toning (chiefly to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners) not affecting any lettering and with a couple of minor, imperceptible archival tape repairs to verso. A landmark of modern economics and the author's magnum opus. In the field of pure theory it was probably the most influential book of the first half of the 20th century; Value and Capital provided the springboard from which the brilliant theorists of the next generation would jump off. Overall, Hicks will probably appear in the history of economics as the greatest British theorist of the century (Niehans, 359, 371). Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. A nicer copy than normally seen. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition of this work in honor of John Hicks. Octavo, original cloth. Signed twice by Robert Solow, who contributed an article in this volume. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. Edited by J.N. Wolfe. John R. Hicks's early work as a labour economist culminated in The Theory of Wages still considered standard in the field. He collaborated with R.G.D. Allen in two seminal papers on value theory published in 1934. His magnum opus is Value and Capital published in 1939. The book built on ordinal utility and mainstreamed the now-standard distinction between the substitution effect and the income effect for an individual in demand theory for the 2-good case. It generalized the analysis to the case of one good and a composite good, that is, all other goods. It aggregated individuals and businesses through demand and supply across the economy. It anticipated the aggregation problem, most acutely for the stock of capital goods. It introduced general equilibrium theory to an English-speaking audience, refined the theory for dynamic analysis, and for the first time attempted a rigorous statement of stability conditions for general equilibrium. In the course of analysis Hicks formalized comparative statics. In the same year, he also developed the famous "compensation" criterion called Kaldorâ"Hicks efficiency for welfare comparisons of alternative public policies or economic states. Hicks's most familiar contribution in macroeconomics was the Hicksâ"Hansen ISâ"LM model, which formalized an interpretation of the theory of John Maynard Keynes. The model describes the economy as a balance between three commodities: money, consumption and investment. Hicks himself did not embrace the theory as he interpreted it; and, in a paper published in 1980, Hicks asserted that it had omitted some crucial components of Keynes's arguments, especially those related to uncertainty.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition of the economist's groundbreaking work. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Signed by John R. Hicks on the front free endpaper. An excellent example in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing and wear. Housed in a custom half clamshell box. Rare and desirable signed. Upon publication, Value and Capital was hailed as a classic work. In it, J.R. Hicks introduced Walrasian general equilibrium theory to an English-speaking audience. This was the first publication to attempt a rigorous statement of stability conditions for general equilibrium. In doing so, Hicks formalised comparative statics. The book synthesises dynamic-adjustment elements from Walras and Wicksell and from Marshall and Keynes. It distinguishes temporary, intermediate, and long-run equilibrium with expectations as to future market conditions affecting behavior in current markets (Bliss, 1987, pp. 64243). "In this book Professor Hicks has essayed two tasks of major importance; to reduce modern economic analysis to a manageable whole; and to construct a system of Economic Dynamics . This is one of the few books which mark a stage in the advance of a science" (The Economist).
