Top corner bumped, dust jacket edges faintly rubbed, else fine. Reprint of the 1827 collection, supplemented with additional tail-pieces. Introduction, notes and appendix by foremost Bewick scholar Iain Bain who headed the Tate Gallery publications department 1972 - 1994. Dust jacket preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Full dark red leather with gold-stamped Bewick's signature on front cover and title ("Bewick") on spine, illustrated from 15 original wood blocks carved by Thomas Bewick and printed by R. Hunter Middleton (the Bewick authority), frenchfold, type pages were letterpress printed on Troya paper by Charles Young at the Norman Press, binding by Monastery Hill Binder, in near fine condition. Bewick is most famous for his book, A History of British Birds, whose wood engravings are much admired for the small and often humorous vignettes. Engravings fine strikes with some minor foxing. Contents fine with no stains but minor browning to the edges. A Very Good to Near Fine example with little wear. The volume measures: 29.5 x 23.5 x 3.5 cm. Each leaf measures 290 x 230 mm.
