The author compares the Pennsylvania (separate) and the Auburn (silent) systems, arguing that the former is superior in achieving rehabilitation. The sep…arate system's complete isolation of prisoners during their entire sentence is said to allow for true reform by preventing further contamination and providing ample time for reflection. Meanwhile, the Auburn system's reliance on silence during work while allowing social interaction is argued to be less effective due to prisoners forming new criminal connections. The book contends that the complete isolation of the separate system, while seemingly harsh, can break prisoners from ingrained habits and negative influences, enabling them to reintegrate into society as reformed citizens.
