Paperback. Etat : New. This special issue of Visual Cognition collects some 30 articles on Visual Search and Attention by leading experts from a variety of disciplines, including experimental psychology, neuropsychology, neurophysiology and computational modelling. The articles are updated versions of papers presented at the 2003 Munich Visual Search Symposium. The symposium's goal, carried forward in this collection, was to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue, in order to identify important shared issues and consider ways of how these can be resolved using convergent methodologies. Reflecting the symposium discussions, the Special Issue is divided into four thematic sections: preattentive processing and role of memory in visual search, brain mechanisms and computational modelling of visual search.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - What captures attention Under which circumstances can visual attention be captured For over a century, the control of visual attention has been examined in terms of top-down and bottom-up processes. The top-down guidance of attention derives from the knowledge one has about what one wants to find. The bottom-up guidance of attention derives from when something in an image is unique and contrasts with what surrounds it. This book first reviews the literature on the visual attributes that guide attention in visual search. The second part of this book reviews the results from a set of experiments that utilize a novel visual search procedure to address the role of top-down and bottom-up processes in visual search for conjunctions of features (for example, a real-world object may be defined as a conjunction of color and shape, like a red and round apple). The main experimental result is that bottom-up processes guide attention in a conjunction search task. These results and this method can be applied to the study of both normal cognition and special populations, such as persons with ADHD, Autism, or Schizophrenia. The book is addressed to professionals in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, vision, and philosophy. It is also directed towards clinical researchers with an interest in applying visual search and attention methods.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Object detection and recognition is a topic of significant interest in computer and robot vision. It is required in most applications of computational vision, for example, biometric systems, medical imaging, intelligent cars, factory automation, and image databases. One of the major challenges in designing object recognition systems is to construct methods that are fast and capable of operating on standard computer platforms. The more developed such systems become, the more urgentbecomes the need for a pre-selection system that enables subsequent processing to focus only on relevant data. One mechanism to achieve this is visual attention: it selects regions in a visual scene that are most likely to contain objects of interest. The field of visual attention is currently the focus of much researchfor bothbiological and artificial systems. This monograph presents a complete computational system for visual attention and object detection: VOCUS (Visual Object detection with a CompUtational attention System) is a system capable of automatically selecting regions of interest in images and detecting specific objects. It represents a major step forward on integrating data-driven and model-driven information into a single framework. Additionally, the volume contains an extensive review of the literature on visual attention, detailed evaluations of VOCUS in different settings, and applications of the system in the context of object recognition and robotics.…
