Full tree calf leather with heavy wear and slight moisture damage at the top margin at the gutter not affecting the text. The spine is off of volume one. LACKING the 40 plates. Collated and complete with the text present and half titles. Front material reads "año 7 de la República" = "Year 7 of the Republic" (1799). Boards still well attached but this is a reading / binding copy only. Text relatively clean with only slight age toning to the text block in volume three. Previous owner's bookplate on the front endpaper behind the front cover. Front endsheet has plate that states "Gift of Mrs. Arthur Hoskins to Washington University Saint Louis. Some of the leaves in the plate volume are slightly soiled or thumbed, or having very faint clear old waterstains. Notwithstanding these defects still a fine and handsome copy. First edition. Description of a discovery voyage made by Sonnini (1751 - 1812) on the orders of king Louis XV of France in 1777 through low and upper Egypt. The author was highly interested in the natural history of the region (being at one time, secretary to Buffon). He treats the natural history of the region accordingly in this travel account.
