"Das Werk ist pure Satire: Viel eher eine Streitschrift als ein frühes unpolitisches Werk der Fantastik, voller Seitenhiebe und Gehässigkeiten. Als Gegenreaktion (.) entstanden daher auch 'entschärfte' Ausgaben, in denen die manchmal derben Episoden und gesellschaftskritischen Passagen ad usum Delphini aufbereitet wurden: es wurde solange zusammengestrichen und vereinfacht, bis aus der Geschichte ein Kinderbuch für 'einfache Gemüter' geworden war, wie es auch heute noch oft mit netten und lieblichen Illustrationen aufgelegt wird" (wikipedia).- Gebräunt, Gebrauchsspuren.
