From New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper comes this classic romantic tale of two men entangled in the nets of deadly temptation--and one irresistible, ambitious woman caught in a trap of her own devising. . . . At twenty-six, Serena Jameson is a handful--brilliant, manipulative, and passionate, at least when it comes to righting the wrongs of the world. Her father, a renowned computer magnate, is worried about Serena's impetuous nature--as well as a far more tangible threat--and entrusts a colleague, handsome Brian Ashford, to ferry her on a trip across the country. But as usual, Serena has ideas of her own. A novice in affairs of the heart, Serena asks Brian to give her a crash course in seduction so that she can tame the notorious womanizer Joshua Long. But what starts as a simple lesson in love becomes a complex erotic dance, as both men find themselves caught in the snares of Serena's undeniable wiles. Is Serena trying to attract her declared target or her teacher? Who is really ensnaring whom? And can she finish weaving her web before the mysterious cabal eager to kill Serena's father manages to succeed--over her dead body. …

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This book is a memoir of the author's struggle to survive racism and poverty during the Civil Rights Era. Her mother called her Francie Mae. She and her family lived in a world that was confusing, painful and difficult to understand. She lived her entire childhood in poverty and shares her journey of survival. She was a curious child and sought answers to her many questions about inequality. She took a journey through a land showing the dark side while searching for her piece of the American dream. She learned to rely on her faith to help her navigate the rough roads ahead. She became socially conscious and advocated for justice. She prevailed She was inspired to write the book when her young granddaughter began asking questions about race. She and many other children are living in a similar world now. Racism and poverty exists and children should know why they exist. Racism is a learned behavior and we owe it to our children to teach them it is wrong. Racism may lead to poverty. These are difficult topics to discuss, yet we owe it to our children to engage in age appropriate conversations. As they struggle to understand the world around them they may have unanswered questions. If not answered, children come to their own conclusions and their conclusions may not be correct. Parents shouldn't remain silent. Avoiding talking about race and poverty will not make it go away. Francie Mae's parents listened to her questions and provided answers in ways she could understand. Many ideologies were formed many years ago. The way people felt and thought became twisted together like a web. If not challenged, the web tangles more. It is time to join together and untangle the web. We owe it to our current and future generations.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In the Spider's Web is set in Ash Meadow, a prison for children in Washington State. The story centers on Caitlin Weber, a girl who, in collusion with her mother and four other children, murdered her mother's employer. While the murder is briefly depicted, it is with what happens afterward to two of the perpetrators, particularly Caitlin, that the story is primarily focused.Arrested less than a week following the murder, Caitlin and her best friend, Sonia, are charged as adults and each sentenced to 22 years in prison. Caitlin was 13 years old; Sonia was 14 years and one week old. Neither had been in legal trouble before. Upon sentencing, they were sent to Ash Meadow where they would stay until they turned 18. Then they would be transferred to Purdy, a prison for adult women, to serve the remainder of their sentences. In the Spider's Web focuses on Caitlin's experience in Ash Meadow and on her relationship with Jerry, her rehabilitation counselor (and the author of this book). Part I of the book provides the reader with a feel for the prison environment that awaits Caitlin, and introduces the reader to the staff and inmates of the Maximum Security unit where Caitlin will live for most of her time in Ash Meadow. Part I also introduces the reader to the relationships between staff, and between staff and the administrators who govern the prison, which relationships will have an effect on Caitlin.Part II begins with Caitlin's arrival at the prison and the start of her relationship with Jerry. The relationship is rocky at first, because Jerry has the same name and is around the same age as the man Caitlin helped to kill. Although Jerry does not know this at first, Caitlin is effectively haunted by her victim. She is assailed by guilt over what she did, and anger toward her mother whose idea the murder was. She struggles with depression and has contemplated suicide. She wants t deny responsibility for her role in the murder and resents Jerry for bringing up the past when she wants to forget it. But as their relationship progresses, they develop respect and even love for each other, she for him because he does not judge her and because she senses that in some way he is like her; he for her because, despite her sometimes feeling overwhelmed by prison life, something in her insists that she keep trying to better herself, to make life tolerable for herself even in confinement. He is the surrogate for the father who abandoned her when she was small, and she is the daughter he lost when he was divorced.Eventually Caitlin is transferred to the adult prison at Purdy and Jerry resigns from his job. In an epilogue, the reader sees that their relationship, while changed, continues. Leonard Chang, author of Triplines and Over the Shoulder, provides this testimonial: In the Spider's Web takes a penetrating look into the lives of juvenile prisoners caught in their traumatized circumstances and struggling to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Jerome Gold has transformed his years of experience as a rehab counselor into a riveting and important narrative, offering insight into a difficult world that is at times harrowing as well as deeply moving. This is a resonant and significant book.Note: In the Spider's Web is the second book to be published concerning the author's experience as a counselor in Ash Meadow. The first book was published under the title Paranoia & Heartbreak: Fifteen Years in a Juvenile Facility. A third book is underway.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Britons all getting poorer. What does that look like for British children, and their life chances? If we found seven typical 5-year-olds to represent today's UK, who would they be? What would their stories reveal? Seven Children is about injustice and hope. Danny Dorling's highly original book constructs seven average children from millions of statistics--each child symbolizing the very middle of a parental income bracket, from the poorest to the wealthiest. Dorling's seven were born in 2018, when the UK faced its worst inequality since the Great Depression and became Europe's most socially divided nation. They turned 5 in 2023, amid a devastating cost-of-living crisis. Their country has Europe's fastest-rising child poverty rates, and even the best-off of the seven is disadvantaged. Yet aspirations endure. Immersive, surprising and thought-provoking, Seven Children gets to the heart of post-pandemic Britain's most pressing issues. What do we miss when we focus only on the superrich and the most deprived? What kinds of lives are British children living>between the extremes? Why are most British parents on below-average income? Who are today's real middle class? And how can we reverse the trends leaving all children worse off than their parents. Bardin, Dave (illustrateur).…
