WHERE THE AIR IS CLEAR, first published in Spanish as LA REGIÓN MÁS TRANSPARENTE (1959), is regarded as a major early work of Latin Boom Literature. This copy is inscribed to one Michael Lacey; based on the details of the inscription (noting Lacey is Irish and that he kept Fuentes "in balance," it's possible the recipient was the well-known editor, publisher, and journalist who co-founded the PHOENIX NEW TIMES and Backpage. 8'' x 5.25''. Original color pictorial wrappers with design by Pat de Groot. 376 pages. Inscribed by Fuentes in black ink to half title: "To Michael Lacey, / whose Irish soul / has kept my Mexican / passion in good / balance - / all best for 1975, / Carlos Fuentes / Washington / Dec. 1974." Minor shelfwear; single tape repair to rear joint and a couple bits of sticker residue. Tight.
