Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Grey cloth with green lettering and cover illustration in green and white. Moderate discoloration shows on light colored boards, endpapers and closed outside edges. Text is clean and bright, no marks."A tender story of an old grandfather and his fourteen year old granddaughter, quaint and charming in Robert Nathan's inimitable way. It lacks the subtle under-currents of social commentary that characterize such books as One More Spring; there is nothing of fantasy, except in the manner of telling. But Nathan has a poignancy of characterization which makes the slightest of his tales rare. The grandfather tells the story, and without once describing himself, the picture is a clearly defined one. The story of his problems with an interfering and conventional sister, a precise and unique secretary, a young German exile on whom he took pity, and the grandchild who has her first case of violent calf love is told with shy humor, charm and a persuasive quality that gets under the skin." (Kirkus).

Ajouter au panierFirst edition. An early version of an advance reading copy, unusual as such. Signatures bound in dust jacket trimmed to fit. This copy with "7313" stamped on first blank page (covered by dust jacket). A seemingly charming tale of a young girl and her grandfather, if one leaves out what the dust jacket flap describes as her "ripening into womanhood" . at 14 years of age. (Involuntary shudder followed by hope the tale is an innocent enough one.) Fragile production, good to very good in pictorial paperwraps.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. NATHAN, Robert [228] pp. Alfred A. Knopf 1938 8" x 5 7/8" Jacket drawing by Norman Reeves An older man plays cupid as his teenage granddaughter discovers love for the first time. HENRY PENNIFER, an author in his seventies, lives in New York City. He is rearing his teen-aged granddaughter ELLEN whose parents were killed in an accident. Henry is a loving guardian but isn t always able to relate to Ellen who is growing up before his eyes. Henry hires as his secretary ERIC VON SIEGENFELS, a charming, well-educated German who fled the Nazi regime. Ellen slowly falls in love with the young man. Through Henry s eyes, we watch as Ellen grapples with her new feelings and her desire to please the object of her affection. This young love leads to a simple but moving gesture of generosity towards Eric s far-off sister. Robert Nathan weaves a poignant coming of age story which explores the magic, purity, and the selflessness of young love. Robert Nathan continues to go against the tide. In an era of sea-level realism he continues to observe, and to look to, some heights of experience that make the motions of living more then endurable Whether or not Mr. Nathan s readers will be sorry to see him depart from the spun-glass world of The Fiddler in Barly, Jonah, The Enchanted Voyage and similar fantasies is not to be determined at this advanced date. But they can be assured that as a story-teller of astonishing deftness and design and humanity their author has not changed.
