Wo nämlich die Große Brennessel, die wichtigste Futterpflanze ihrer Larven, mit chemischen Unkrautbekämpfungsmitteln vernichtet wird, ist auch der Fortbestand dieser Schmetterlinge nicht mehr möglich. Die drei Arten aus der Familie der Fleckenfalter, Bewohner der nördlichen und gemäßigten Zone Eurasiens, unterscheiden sich in manchen Lebensgewohnheiten und in Einzelheiten ihrer Brutbiologie beträchtlich voneinander. Um die Ausbreitung und den Fortbestand der Art zu sichern, unternehmen alle drei Fleckenfalter zum Teil beachtliche Wanderungen, die sich bei manchen Individuen über 100 km weit erstrecken können. Der Wissenschaft gelang es, durch Markierung der Falter erste, aufschlußreiche Ergebnisse über diese Fluggewohnheiten zu gewinnen. Auch Schmetterlinge sind von Infektionskrankheiten bedroht; Virosen dezimieren in manchen Jahren ganze Populationen von Raupen und Puppen.
