The deployment of broadband cell-based technologies including demand for internet mobility and their integration with emerging broadband wireless access networks (BWANs) are becoming increasingly important. Mobility and connection management, - cation management, connection establishment, quality of service provisioning, inter-working of wire-lines with wireless networks for voice, video, image, and data were some of the areas of focus in wireless networking of this conference. In the last few years with the development of digital technologies, satellites have emerged in the forefront of multimedia delivery techniques. From using current digital broadcast systems for web access to developing sophisticated platforms for integrated services, satellite networking is now a well-established solution for the broadband needs of the new millennium. This workshop was intended to providea timely forumfor exploratoryresearchandpracticalcontributionsfrom NorthAmerica,Europe,TheMiddleEast,andTheFarEast.Ithelpeddesigners to identify the theoretical and actual problems that face today s complex pr- lems associated with mobile and wireless communications links and networks.

Conferences in the Networking series span the interests of several distinct, but related, TC6 working groups, including Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. Re ecting this, the conference was structured with three Special Tracks: (i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols; (ii) Performance of Computer and Communication Networks; and (iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. However, beyond providing a forum for the presentation of high-quality - search in various complementary aspects of networking, the conference was also targetedtocontributingtoauni edviewofthe eldandtofosteringtheinter- tion and exchange of fruitful ideas between the various related (and overlapping) specialized subcommunities therein. Towards this second objective, more than a few conference sessions (and thematic sections in this book) 'cut across' the Special Tracks, along more generic or fundamental concepts. Networking 2004 was fortunate to attract very high interest among the c- munity, and the conference received 539 submissions from 44 countries in all ve continents. These gures correspond to a remarkable increase in subm- sions from the previous very successful events (roughly, a 156% increase over Networking 2000 and 71% over Networking 2002), and indicate that Netw- king conferences are progressively becoming established as worldwide reference events in the eld.

However, the rapid evolution of wireless systems not only promises increased functionality, reliability, availability, and security, as well as putting a wide variety of new services at the users' disposal it also creates a number of design challenges that our research community is now facing. Scientists and engineers need to come up with, and promptly implement, novel wireless network architectures, while system operators and planners rethink their business models and attend to the growing expectations of their customer base. To provide a suitable forum for discussion between researchers, practitioners, and industry representatives interested in new developments in the respective research area, IFIP WG 6. 8 launched three separate series of conferences: MWCN (Mobile and Wireless Communications Networks), PWC (Personal Wireless Communications), and WSAN (WirelessSensor and Actors Networks). In 2008, MWCN and PWC were merged into the IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference (WMNC 2008), held in Toulouse, France, from September 30 to October 2, 2008. MWNC 2008 and PWC 2008 topics were subsequently revised with a view to covering the whole spectrum of hot issues in wireless and mobile networking. As a result, IFIP WG 6. 8 decided to add WSAN as another WMNC track.
