A collection of fairy tales gathered by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a Scottish author and literary critic. In his Preface, Lang notes that this Yellow Fairy Book is the fourth in his fairy tale series following the Blue, Red, and Green Fairy Books. In response to his critics, he humorously quips that he has no regrets in publishing yet another Fairy Book for his "jury" of children readers have spoken and voiced their approval of the series. Presented herein are many fairy tales taken from a variety of sources. A sampling of the tales include six brothers who are turned into swans, witches who plot dastardly plans, valiant princes and princesses in distress, a hunter who encounters magical cabbage, an Indigenous boy who meets an otherworldly fate after being abandoned by his siblings, and a prince who seeks to rescue the Flower Queen's daughter from dragons in a golden castle. Andrew also credits his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang (nee Alleyne; 1851-1933), and a team of other authors and translators, as having written all of the fairy tales herein which are based on old sources from a variety of cultures. Leonora was an English author, editor, and translator and collaborated with her husband on the Fairy Books series from 1889-1913 in those various capacities. Notably, while Andrew became famous for the Fairy Books series, most of them were written, translated, and edited by Leonora and a small group of other writers, most of whom were women. Their process was to adapt old fairy tales into English translations written in a style that was more palatable to a contemporary audience.
