AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the Secretary of the Executive Department of Georgia E.H. PIERCE to the author, lawyer & journalist STEPHEN FRANKS MILLER regarding the settlement with the OCONEE NAVIGATION ASSOCIATION.

- Approximately 80 words penned on 10 inch high by 8 inch wide creamy white paper. In his letter, penned in an unknown hand and signed by E.H. Pierce as Secretary of the Executive Department Georgia, Pierce informs Stephen Frank Miller that he has "been instructed by the Governor to transmit to you the enclosed copy of Mr. Hine's Report, a Copy of the Receipts given by the Commissioners of the Oconee Navigation Association, and the Copy of the Report of the Committee of the late Board." Signed "E.H. Pierce". The letter is folded for mailing with minor chips and tears to the edges, including a slightly longer tear at right above Pierce's signature. There is a tiny hole at the end of the last line of the text. Good. The recipient, Stephen Franks Miller (1805-1873) was an author, lawyer and journalist. Admitted to the bar at 22 years of age, he was elected solicitor general of Georgia's Southern circuit. He went on to become editor of Georgia's "Independent Monitor" and subsequently statistical editor of New Orleans' "De Bow's Review". Miller authored several books including "The Bench and Bar of Georgia" and the "Memoir of the Late General Blackshear". In 1831, Miller was appointed by the Governor as the agent for the State to complete "the settlement with the Commissioners of the Oconee River.". N° de réf. du vendeur 95652
